Zoo and Conservation Science Students Remove Invasive Species – and You Should, Too!
Posted Apr 24, 2025
A class of Zoo and Conservation Science students is coordinating a day of service to remove invasive species at Highbanks Metro Park and to educate others about invasive species. One student in the class is Gavin Spragg ’27, a Zoo and Conservation Science major with a Sociology minor. He is also the current president of the Birderbein student organization for birdwatching.
We asked Gavin to tell us why we should help remove invasive species at this event and every day.
What is an invasive species?
Gavin: A non-native species that has been introduced to an ecosystem commonly by humans, that causes harm to the environment or human health.
How do invasive species hurt the environment?
Gavin: Invasive species outcompete native species which leads to the decline of native species and an overwhelming number of invasive species.
How does removing invasive species improve an ecosystem?
Gavin: Removing invasive species prevents them from outcompeting the native species and allows for native species to thrive.
What are common invasive species in central Ohio?
Gavin: Some common invasive plants in Ohio are Amur Honeysuckle, Callery Pear, Autumn Olive, and Garlic Mustard. Outside of plants, there are House Sparrows, Carp, and Painted Turtles.
What can the average person do in their everyday life to combat invasive species?
Gavin: Everyone can remove invasive species in their backyards! Using an app like iNaturalist or the internet is useful in identifying invasive species.
